Artists’ Books at Reed College
Check out the Reed College Artists’ Book collection website. You can search, browse and view the books page by page.
From the site:
“The spectrum of modern and contemporary Artists’ Books in Reed College’s Special Collections and collected on this website include traditional letterpress printed books of poetry, conceptual book works, sculptural and visual works, concrete poetry, and magazine works. This unique collection, which holds significant 20th century and contemporary artists’ books, gives students and the broader population insight into the significant role artist’s books have played among the avant-garde of Eastern and Western Europe, Asia and the United States, from the turn of the last century to the present. This includes livre d’artiste works by David Hockney, avant-garde works by Sonia Delaunay, conceptualist works by Sol LeWitt, and contemporary works by Xu Bing.”

One million images…
The Victoria and Albert Museum has launched a Beta version of their Search the Collections site with over one million images. The result is a rich online repository of items. Some of the images are on the small side and the quality seems to vary a bit, but this is still an important resource. And it’s full of fascinating things: here’s an example of a charming little biscuit tin from 1930.

Re-opening of the Vassar Art Library
Today beginning at 11:30am, there will be talks, a campus architectural walk, and a panel on Modernism to celebrate the re-opening of the Vassar College Art Library. The Art Library was recently renovated and restored, and is a “rare example of a complete early modernist interior from the pre-World War II period in the United States.” Read more here, and stop by to look at the new space!

Copyright info
Columbia University hosts a great site with copyright info specifically for research and teaching, including a section on Fair Use. Thanks to the wonderful Visual Resources Association listserv for bringing this to my attention.

Good “DiRT”
The Digital Research Tools (DiRT) wiki is a great first stop for anyone trying to figure out the best way to use 2.0 tools in their research, “particularly in the humanities and social sciences.” For example, do you want some suggestions on tools to help you brainstorm? Analyze texts? Edit images?

Two new online collections
Two terrific new online collections:
The North Carolina Architects & Builders Biographical Dictionary
“This biographical dictionary highlights architects and builders who have produced North Carolina’s architecture for more than 300 years. A brief biography plus a building list traces each person’s work in the state. This is a growing website, with many more entries still to be added.”
Pre-Raphaelite Online Resource
note: Do take a minute to download the Silverfast application to view some of the collections of images on this site. It only takes a minute and worked seamlessly on my Mac with Safari.
“Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery received funding from JISC to digitise the Pre-Raphaelite collection and make it accessible online for the education community. The resulting Pre-Raphaelite Online Resource provides full record information and allows users to examine images in great detail. You can choose to browse the online collection, make simple searches or to interrogate the collection data using filtering tools. The ability to filter the collection in this way should be particularly useful for study and research. You can also interact with the online collection by creating your own personal collections of images and by discussing the works with the online community.”
